Guidance Counselor - Kim Hoffman
My name is Kim Hoffman and I am the guidance counselor at Laurel Hill Primary. I have been a guidance counselor in the Charleston County School District since January of 1995. I love my job here at Laurel Hill and thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your child.
The Laurel Hill Primary counseling program is a comprehensive counseling program designed to help students with their overall academic experience and to assist with personal growth. Students will work with the school counselor through classroom guidance lessons, small-group sessions, and individually as needed. Laurel Hill’s counseling program gives students the opportunity to further their personal development academically, socially, and emotionally. The main goal of the counseling program is to assist students in learning the skills and attitudes necessary to be successful learners and productive citizens.
Our school guidance program includes the opportunity for students to participate in small-group counseling. About 5-6 students are selected to participate in a group that will meet once a week for about 25 minutes. Group counseling is an excellent way for children to learn new skills, practice new behaviors, understand how to deal with some problems life can present and make new friends. Participation in this group is voluntary and your permission is required for your child to participate. Groups rotate every quarter and group topics vary.
Some Group Topic Include: Dealing with Anger, Divorce, Self Control, Personal Space, Self Esteem, Worry and ADHD and more!
Students will meet with me individually on an as needed basis. Individual guidance is different than a therapeutic setting and is on a short term basis. Students are typically referred through parents or teachers.
Classroom guidance lessons are a great way to teach students valuable life lessons that will help to build their character and help develop life skills . Additional guidance lessons will be taught on an as-needed basis with individual classes. Below is a list of topics that will be covered.
Caring and Respect for Others
How to deal with Teasing
Tattling vs. Reporting
Conflict Resolution and Problem Solving
Whole Body Listening
Social Skills Program
I work with individual teachers to help design lessons to increase social skills and additional needs within the classroom.
