Guidance Counselor - Gionna Lesky
Email: gionna_lesky@charleston.k12.sc.us

My name is Gionna Lesky and I am so excited to begin a new year as the guidance counselor at Laurel Hill Primary.  I am originally from Mt. Pleasant and went through the Charleston County school system myself! I received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at the University of South Carolina.  I then taught 3rd grade in Berkeley County for four years at a Title 1 school.  While I was a teacher, I realized how much I love character education, working with students in small groups, and helping students become successful in and out of the classroom.  I decided to get my Master's degree at the Citadel in Elementary School Counseling and I could not be more thrilled to be the guidance counselor, here at Laurel Hill!

Groups
Our school guidance program includes the opportunity for students to participate in small-group counseling.  About 5-6 students are selected to participate in a group that will meet once a week for about 25 minutes.  Group counseling is an excellent way for children to learn new skills, practice new behaviors, understand how to deal with some problems life can present and make new friends.  Participation in this group is voluntary and your permission is required for your child to participate.   Groups rotate every quarter and group topics vary.

Some Group Topic Include: Dealing with Anger, Divorce, Self Control, Personal Space, Self Esteem, Worry and ADHD and more!

Individual
Students will meet with me individually on an as needed basis.  Individual guidance is different than a therapeutic setting and is on a short term basis.  Students are typically referred through parents or teachers.

Classroom Guidance
Classroom guidance lessons are a great way to teach students valuable life lessons that will help to build their character and help develop life skills .  Additional guidance lessons will be taught on an as-needed basis with individual classes.    Below is a list of topics that will be covered.

Caring and Respect for Others
Personal Safety
How to deal with Teasing
Bullying
Tattling vs. Reporting
Conflict Resolution and Problem Solving

Friendship

Self Concept

Whole Body Listening

Social Skills Program
I work with individual teachers to help design lessons to increase social skills and additional needs within the classroom.
