My name is Kyle Smalls and I’m the Assistant Administrator at Laurel Hill this year! I am a native of Charleston and a product of CCSD. After graduating from West Ashley High School, I attended Morris College located in Sumter, South Carolina earning a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I also earned a Master's degree in School Administration and Supervision from Charleston Southern University. As an undergraduate, I was a member of the Call Me MISTER program; which provides annual scholarships to minority students majoring in Early Childhood or Elementary Education. I moved back to Charleston in 2010 and began teaching 6thgrade ELA /Social Studies at West Ashley Middle School. I have taught 6th grade ELA, 6th grade History, 7th grade Reading, and have coached middle school basketball during my 7 years in education. The last two years of my career have been spent serving the school district as a School Climate Coach and PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) Coach. While working on the middle school level, I served in many leadership positions and was a finalist for Teacher of the Year in 2014. In 2015, I founded an all boys program for students in grades 6-8 and our goal was to provide the young males with experiences that will assist them in becoming better students for their school and community.
I have been married for 5 years to my wife Denise. We have a 2 year old son (Kyle Jr.) and we are expecting our second son (Keegan) in November 2016. I am an avid basketball and football fan. Go Lakers! Go Panthers! I enjoy playing hide and seek with my son, making my wife laugh, and supporting our students in many of their extracurricular activities.
It is my philosophy as an educator that building positive relationships is a major component to academic achievement and students’ social well-being. I believe that teamwork makes the dream work and I look forward to building positive relationships with all parents, students, and stakeholders of Laurel Hill Primary. The 2016-2017 school year will be a great one!
